So…. you’ve decided that you want to spend your holiday in Italy but, if it’s your first time in the country, you might be finding it hard to decide where in Italy to visit….
If so, don’t worry. Help is on hand!
The best thing to do is to start by thinking about good holidays you have had in the past. Think about what it was that made the holiday so successful. Was it the accommodation, the choice of things to do or was it more to do with the people you met? It could be anything but getting clear on this will help you to decide what you need to prioritise when making any future holiday plans.
Italy is a surprisingly diverse country. Even the landscapes differ dramatically, from the rugged mountains and lakes in the North of the country to the gentle rolling hillsides of Tuscany and Umbria and then further South to the combination of mountainous rocky terrain, farm land and sunny beaches of Calabria and Sicily.
The choice of things to do in each region also varies dramatically. If you like food and wine, Tuscany and Umbria is often an obvious choice of area to visit with their array of vineyards and olive groves and focus on food. However, Italy is renowned for it’s food wherever you go so don’t restrict your choices too quickly. The Slow Food movement started in Italy and strives to preserve the traditional and regional cuisine of each area. The movement is flourishing all over the country.
Other factors to consider may be the weather. The South of Italy can get exceptionally hot during the Summer months, so may or may not suit you dependent on your ability to tolerate the heat! On the flip side, if you are looking for a Winter holiday, maybe you want to be near some skiing opportunities? With the Alps in the North and the Appenines running more from North to South, there are a number of areas where you can combine some days skiing with some days sightseeing.
