Planning a holiday on the Amalfi Coast this year? Then take a look at our guide to the top 10 things to see and do during your trip, courtesy of Bookings For You.
1) Pompeii – A trip to Pompeii will be every bit as good as you would expect it to be. Vesuvius erupted back in 79AD, showering the nearby town of Pompeii in lava, ash and soot, effectively ensuring the city.
There is an incredible amount to see here including the amphitheatre, palaestra, basilica, granary and various houses. You’ll need to spend a few hours here to do the site justice. Only thing to remember is that temperatures in this area often reach 30-35 degrees in the main Summer months. Take plenty of water, sunscreen and sun hat with you and wear sensible, comfy shoes.
2) Take a boat from either Sorrento or Naples to the beautiful island of Capri. The island can get incredibly busy during the Summer months, but don’t stay away on account of the crowds!
3) Visit the Blue Grotto. Measuring 60 metres long and 25 metres wide, this is a cove on the island of Capri that is flooded with a brilliant blue light. Either take a boat trip into the cave on one of the many tourist boats, or even better, swim in at the end of the day when all the boats have gone home!
4) Enjoy the walk to the summit of Mount Vesuvius.
It is still classed as an active volcano and so could erupt at any time, but don’t worry … scientists will warn us if an eruption is imminent!!!
5) Visit the Grotta Smeralda. Less well known than the Blue Grotto in Capri, this cave was named after the characteristic green light inside the cave. Accessed via a staircase or lift down from a coastal road car park, the entrance fee includes a short boat ride in the cove. Try to visit at lunchtime if you can as the light is most intense around midday.
6) Drive along the coast road to enjoy the spectacular views. If you can take your eyes off the winding road and other cars, holidaymakers will enjoy spectacular views of the idyllic coastline. There are plenty of great photo opportunities for the keen photographers amongst you!
7) Visit the beautiful coastal town of Positano.
Widely photographed, the town boasts a great beach and fascinating streets with charming shops. Make a point of visiting one of the workshops making the town’s famous leather sandals.
8) Visit Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone in Ravello. Both villas have stunning gardens to visit and visitors to Villa Cimbrone will enjoy one of the best panoramic views in all of Italy..
9) Take a walk around Amalfi’s port, filled with fishing boats and yachts.
10) Take a break from the coast and enjoy a walk in the mountains. You can easily catch a bus to Montepertuso. This is a tiny hamlet situated above Positano which legend says is the place of the legendary battle between the Devil and the Virgin Mary. It’s a great place for those who enjoy hiking, with several paths connecting the hamlet to the Lattari Mountains.
