Tuscany villas near the beach

Tuscany is most famous for its iconic cities – Florence, Pisa and Siena need no introduction – and its spectacular countryside, from the rolling hills of the Val d’Orcia in the south to the Chianti vineyards further north. However, Tuscany can also boast an equally spectacular coastline stretching 230 kilometres along its western flank. `This coastline is also extremely diverse. Opt for the glitz and glamour of Tuscany’s northern beach resorts – Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio – or instead head further south where you will find the pace much quieter and peaceful along Tuscany’s Etruscan coast from Livorno to the Gulf of Baratti. Or opt to go even further south again to Maremma where you’ll find a much more natural kind of beauty, set in nature reserves and national parks.

In 2022 an impressive 18 beach municipalities with 35 beaches were awarded with the prestigious Blue Flag status. The Blue Flag award is not handed out lightly. Awarded based on strict environmental and ecological criteria, all these Tuscany beaches had to demonstrate clean seas and an exceptionally high quality environment to have been granted the honour of Blue Flag status. And even then, the award is only granted for a year. Twelve months later, these beaches will all need to be able to demonstrate that they have maintained this incredibly high standard.

Staying near the Tuscany beaches doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on the opportunity to explore its countryside or its cities either. A 20 minute drive will take you from the heart of historic Pisa to the coast whilst Lucca is just 30 minutes from the popular beaches of Viareggio. Even Florence itself is just 90 minutes from the seaside.
