With the British fascination with weather, and the run of unreliable Summers in the UK over the last few years, those looking to travel to Italy are bound to wonder where they have the best chance of enjoying some much needed sunshine!
Unfortunately there’s no easy answer to that question!
As you would probably expect, July and August are the hottest months wherever you travel to in Italy. In Tuscany and Umbria, average temperatures are typically in the high twenties around 28 or 29 degrees centigrade however they can get into the 30s. In the North in the Italian Lakes, temperatures can reach the same peaks, however, you don’t tend to get the same degree of humidity. Instead, temperatures tend never to get too hot, cooled as they are by the pleasant breezes coming down from the mountains. Temperatures also usually drop during the evening too so it’s not too hot to get a good nights sleep. Further South, the opposite is the case. In the regions of Puglia and Calabria, temperatures tend to reach the low 30s across July and August, however the relative humidity typically ranges from 45% (comfortable) to 88% (very humid) over the course of the 2 months.
Whilst you will have the humidity to contend with further South, on the plus side if you want guaranteed sunshine every day of the week, you’re much more likely to get this the further South you go. In contrast, whilst hopefully you will be lucky with the weather in the North, the Italian Lakes weather does see it’s fair share of rain. The area is incredibly green and beautiful and this does reflect the rainfall it does get. If you’re looking for a holiday with 100% guaranteed sunshine all day every day, this is not the place for you. However if you don’t mind a day of rain here and there, you’ll be fine. There is certainly still plenty to keep you entertained in the Italian Lakes whatever the weather!
If you want to do your best to avoid the rain in the Italian Lakes, then bear in mind that average Lake Como and Lake Maggiore weather conditions dictate that rainfall tends to be heaviest in April and May and lowest over the winter months from December through to March. However, this doesn’t follow a set pattern…!
Certainly early and late Summer is a great time to visit Italy. May, June and September tend to be lovely months to travel to the country, with the weather tending to still be warm and dry wherever you go, but with less of the humidity and excesses of temperature that visitors can sometimes experience in the peak Summer months in the South of the country and on the island of Sardinia.
Don’t be put off travelling during the quieter Autumn and Winter months either. The sun does always seem to have a surprising amount of heat and holidaymakers can enjoy warm days even across the Winter months when the sun is out. That said, be prepared to have your fair share of the wind and rain too. Whilst the weather pattern tends to be predictable in the peak Summer months in areas like Tuscany and Umbria, the same can not necessarily be said across the Winter!
